Tanner's Song

Recently, Tanner participated in Park View Elementary School's Wax Museum. The wax museum is an assignment that the 5th grade students participant in each year. The student selects a person from United States history and studies the person, in depth. After learning about the person, the student dresses up like that person, prepares some props, and presents a little about the person to parents and students in the school. The student sits in a chair, in the hall, and as parents/students pass by, they push a fake button next to the student, and the student comes to life (and tells about their history).

Tanner chose to represent Scott Joplin, a favorite music composer. He had a great time telling about Scott Joplin and playing the piano for the parents and students. After he finished, he told me something he had learned:

One of the fathers who came to the wax museum told Tanner that there were many other great musicians during the same era as Scott Joplin. He then explained that one of the things that made Scott Joplin so famous today, is that Scott could write music. Many of the other musicians could only play music. Because Scott could write the music, his music remains today. Because some of the others could not write their music, their songs died with them. This had an impact on Tanner, he has mentioned it to me several times.

When I returned from work yesterday, Noell was already at her volleyball games. Myranda was preparing to go to a party. Tanner was working on the computer. After a few minutes searching the internet, Tanner turned to me and said, "I can't find the right paper to write." I was intrigued with the comment, so I went to the computer to see what he was doing. He was searching for paper to transcribe a song he had arranged. He then mentioned the comment from the father at the wax museum.

I quickly showed him a computer program we have, called Finale Note Pad. We then sat together and began to list the notes to his song. After several hours, we completed the song. Hopefully this will make the song available for others, and remain throughout the years.
