Keyboard Shift
This week the shift keys on my Bluetooth iPad keyboard stopped working. I got online and discovered that an update caused trouble with the shift keys for a number of people. I tried all the suggestions that they had and was unsuccessful. After all that, I tried the Bluetooth keyboard I use for my computer. The computer keyboard worked just great on my iPad. I then decided to try one of my two old keyboards where the stand that held the iPad had broken. That keyboard worked just fine. I then took the old keyboard from my old iPad case and replaced the newer (broken) keyboard on my newer iPad case. It works great and I think it looks OK.

Noell gives me a hard time when I do some of these repairs, instead of just buying a new iPad case. I was excited because it took me about the same amount of time as I would have spent researching and buying a new keyboard and I didn’t spend any money. Even more importantly, one of the things that brings me the greatest joy in this life is to fix or make something that is useful, especially when it looks fine and works well 😉.
Here’s a photo of the final product. If you look closely you can see the white edges of the black Gorilla Tape covering the edge of the keyboard.
During this week I sold 3 old motorcycles that we owned and haven’t driven in years. I’m hoping to purchase a couple of newer motorcycles that will be better for our family. Here are the three that we passed on to others:

During the week I worked nights on Tuesday and Wednesday and received some phone calls on Thursday. By the time Friday came around, I’d put a full week’s work in, so I spent the day working on preparing financial statements for the businesses that I own. Here’s a summary of businesses I own:
Recently, Tanner decided that he’d like to learn to manage the books for some of the companies. This will be a great benefit to both of us, he’ll learn, and we’ll have more time together. I’ll also have more free time. He and I spent some time Friday working the books together. He’s got a great mind for financial statements.
Also, about 10 days ago I was in a meeting with my supervisor discussing some things that they would like us to do. In the meeting I asked everyone (my supervisor and 6 other co-workers) about stake self-reliance centers. This came up because every 3 to 6 months our leaders ask how many stakes have self-reliance centers. I’ve never heard our leaders describe or show a good self-reliance center in the United States. All they’ve shown that make sense to me are some in undeveloped countries (like those in Africa). In those places most members have no internet, no computer, and basically no electricity. They need computers and internet access to learn, practice and run a business or get a job. The church buildings in a stake typically offer computers with internet access for them to use. These are offered in a room called a stake self-reliance center.
In the United States they just say we should have stake self-reliance centers, but they don’t have to be physical, they can be virtual. ...Back to 10 days ago, in the meeting I asked about this and nobody really had any self-reliance centers they were proud of. I asked my supervisor what a stake self-reliance center needs to be beneficial. He explained that they need to have a location where people with needs can find resources and where the resources of the stake, church, and community are available to assist them.
In the past couple years I had been impressed to create a way for stakes to discover the talents the members have that they could use to bless other members. During this time of the Coronavirus, the stakes have begun to use it more. I feel it’s good, but felt more was needed. Also, I had created a list of church-wide and local community resources on a simple website. I also felt it was good, but needed more.
After that conversation with my supervisor and coworkers, I felt impressed to take another step forward. I combined them onto one stake website with a way for individuals to find the church and community resources, share their talents and skills with others and contact their bishop if their needs require that. While they’re all still rough, and roughly connected, I feel it’s a great step toward a viable stake self-reliance center. Here’s what the webpage looks like:
It links to four areas:
I don’t feel this is perfect, but it’s a step that may lead in the right direction. My hope is that I can share this page with a few stakes and get their impressions. I suspect that they will provide ideas on how to improve it. Hopefully it will be another great step in strengthening the stakes of Zion and ultimately helping the stakes to become a defense and a refuge from the storm (Doctrine & Covenants 115:4-6).
While Noell and I were on our date, Friday night, Noell shared that I’m too busy and not spending enough time with her. Also, while on our date, Tim texted. Tim explained that his children (except Lilly) were in Blackfoot. They planned to campout near the archery range, but the spots were all taken and some had blaring music. They decided to campout on Grandma’s yard. They invited Tanner and I to join them at the archery range on Saturday morning. So, Saturday morning Tanner and I went with Tim, Lorin, Meg, and Jack to shoot at the archery range. It was fun and we found 6 arrows.
All my arrows are the heavy aluminum arrows that I shot as a young man. The arrows we found were the lighter fiberglass arrows. I’d like to go with Tanner on another day and see if we can find enough arrows to practice and shoot all fiberglass arrows more regularly. The lighter the arrow, the more accurately we can shoot from varying distances. This can be a fun, inexpensive hobby—especially if we can find free arrows!
After that, I focused on Noell. I took care of Tate and Dawson, so Noell could bake cinnamon rolls. We then delivered them to some single women, or others that she felt needed a visit. We ended up at Becky’s home with a cinnamon roll for her birthday. Noell and Becky visited while I visited with Jason (and Jake for part of the time).
After a while of visiting, I asked one of my major questions for Jason and Jacob—who have both studied a lot of business. The question was, “How do I buy real estate that has a positive cash flow for $5,000 or less?” At first, my question wasn’t as succinct and the responses were vague. As I continued to re-state the question, I felt like we moved in the right direction. There are numerous business people who tout that you can purchase positive cash flow properties with no cash payment. I’m beginning to believe that and know that if I can do that, I’ll be able to bless many people throughout my life by being in a stronger financial position.
Also, here’s a video I caught a few weeks ago on an early morning. It was so fun to watch the rooster pheasants fighting. This isn’t something I’d seen before and I loved the opportunity to catch it on camera from our deck.

By the time Friday came around, I’d put a full week’s work in, so I spent the day working on preparing financial statements for the businesses that I own. Here’s a summary of businesses I own: - With my brother Greg, a music instrument sales business (small and we buy and sell when we’d like)
- A business that owns some real estate
- A property management company
- An art company that helps to run the art studio in the Candy Jar (candy store) in Blackfoot. I consider this my community service. I don’t expect to earn much money (I’ve earned under $100 in 6 months). I do hope it will promote art in the community, beautify the city, and encourage and bless artists. I hope to grow this and build an Art Guild in the county
- A window washing business and a piano tuning business. I haven’t washed windows for years and only tune pianos when it’s absolutely necessary (but those were preparatory businesses.
