A Flipping End to 2019
On Monday we went to Utah for our Goodrich Christmas celebration. It was great to be with the Jones family again. Noell was in charge of the party games. She decided it was time for a more sanitary version of the game where you eat m&m’s from the pie tin with a plastic knife. At times the game became quite unsanitary. She created a similar game. You still passed one pie tin around until someone rolled a double, seven, or 13 on the dice. At that time you grabbed the pie tin of candy. Then, using a straw to suck up a packaged mini candy, set it outside the pie tin. The game is still exciting, much more sanitary 🤓 and great.
We also had the opportunity to visit with Myranda again. She seemed to have had an excellent time with Christmas in Slovakia and it was truly wonderful to hear her enthusiasm.
For the final day of 2019 we relaxed around the house, holding Tate and Dawson. We then watched the University of Utah play football in their bowl game. Riley’s family gets together to celebrate Utah games so they were with them. We watched the game and hoped the game would improve, but it turned out to be quite a disappointment for us, the Utah fans.
Tanner and I decided to spend the New Year’s Eve celebration at Ken’s gym with his family. If we hurried, we could travel to Ken’s Gym (Tooele Gymnastics Academy), Tanner could learn to do a backflip on the trampoline, I could visit with Ken about his plans for the gym, and we could return just before midnight to ring in the new year. We called Kaneesha on the way and invited them to join us.
The plan began exceptionally. Tanner did tremendous on his backflips and within less than five tries, he was backflipping alone—I was very impressed. Tanner made the flip look so easy.
As a young teenager, Ken helped me learn to do a backflip. After a few wild flips, I was flipping alone, the next day I was home and trying it again and the flips got out of control. Each time I tried, I flipped more wildly and before long I was flipping the entire length of the trampoline. I don’t remember if I landed in the springs or just on them. I never did a backflip on the trampoline again. Since then, doing backflips off a diving board is fun, but trampolines have been out of the flipping question for me.
Good peer pressure can be fun... As we were there, Kaneesha began to encourage me to backflip again. In a few minutes, I was on the trampoline and Ken had helped me do a backflip. By the third flip, I was flipping alone. Here’s one of my first flips in decades. As you can see, jumping on the trampoline isn’t even something I do much. My arms shake with each jump.

Riley also did his first Backflips and Brooks had his first jumps on a trampoline. It’s so fun to watch a toddler learn to get both feet off the ground at the same instant. He was so cute, and as most toddlers, he wanted to jump at the same moment everyone else was. Ken’s son Mitchell had his daughter Millie there. Brooks and Millie had a great time jumping together and chasing around the gym.
Ken and I then left to see the property that he’s considering purchasing to build his own gym and end his gym lease. I’m excited and nervous for him to take this big leap. There are a lot of costs involved in purchasing commercial land that is big enough, and building such a large building.
I remember when Ken was deciding to leave the small building in Grantsville and move to the larger gym in Tooele. I tried to talk him out of it, because the cost of the lease was so high. It’s been a good move and he later expanded into the adjoining part of the building and doubled the size of the gym. It’s all worked out well for him (although there have been a few tough times).
Ken’s courage to begin his own gym and later move into the larger gym in Tooele has been my inspiration to purchase homes and enter the real estate business. Throughout my startup, I’ve thought back to Ken’s discussions where he said, “I’ve done the math, all I need is a few more students. I can get them and we can cover the cost.” In my real estate purchases, I did the math and know that it will cover the cost... I’m so grateful for Ken (and my other brothers’ examples) over so many years of my life.
It was fun to drive around Tooele and see the growth and think through options of where Ken might build a gym. With my limited business experience, Ken and I felt good about the same property. We don’t know if Ken will make the purchase, but it seems to be headed that direction.
After seeing the land, Tanner and I left the gym in a rush. We called Kaneesha on the way and said good bye to her. Unfortunately we were 9 minutes too late to celebrate the new year with Noell and her parents. We did enjoy watching fireworks as we drove from the gym to Jim & Beth’s home.
Our time in Utah was great, but Tate and Dawson had a difficult time sleeping. During the holidays they’ve traveled a lot and been loved by many cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends. They picked up a runny nose. With their small nasal cavities, any mucus causes substantial difficulty breathing. During the last few nights we’ve been up a lot, sucking mucus out of their noses.
We left Utah on New Year’s day to give them and us more rest. We returned Friday for Noell’s Aunt Lois’ funeral. Jerry and their children seem to be handling her passing well. They’ve had years of time with her discussing this day as she’s faced lung trouble. Each of them gave excellent talks.
Saturday we relaxed at home. Although, the truth is that Tate and Dawson still have runny noses and aren’t easy to relax with in that situation. Also, most of us are dealing with our own small colds. I spent some time and installed the baseboards around the upstairs living room. It turned our very nice — if I do say so myself!
Wow, long message. Better get showered for Church.
