HAM Prep.

This has been a very busy week. Because I will be on a business trip for the week, I’ve needed to try to squeeze meetings around the business trip. This is also a great time for stakes to start devotionals and run self-reliance groups. As a result, I’ve had a lot off meetings and many things to do.

With Tate and Dawson, I often try to help get them to bed and then visit with Noell before going to bed. The twins go to bed later than I’d like and I haven’t been getting the sleep I need. On Friday night I got into bed and was just about asleep, when Dawson started to fuss. I put his pacifier into his mouth for a little bit and he fell to sleep. Just as I was falling asleep he fussed again. This time, Noell took care of him. When Noell got back in bed, I awoke and couldn’t get back to sleep. I stayed up for about 2 more hours before I could get back to sleep. While I slept little that night, I did try to discover what things the Lord wanted me to know and during that night, I did have some great experiences.

Sunday I had a stake training to do, so I spent a lot of hours during the week finalizing that. By the time Saturday night came around, I didn’t get to bed as early as normal. Sunday night I was packing for my business trip. When you called, I was so tired, I fell asleep during the conversation - I felt terrible.

Tanner and I have been taking an Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) class. With my work, I encourage stakes to prepare for emergencies and help them when emergencies happen. As amateur radios are about the only area-wide communication tools in a major disaster, I felt it would be beneficial to get licensed. Our final class was Saturday and we take our exam this coming Saturday.

As we hope to be licensed shortly after the test, we’d like to have our own radio. As I asked around, I learned what some good radios were. I found one that people seem to love. After class, one day, a student pinned one of the instructors down and asked him, “If you had to get rid of every radio but one, which would he keep?” The instructor tried to skate around the answer stating that each radio had it’s strength. The person persisted and the teacher finally showed the one he’d keep. It was a Kenwood TM-V71A. During the week, I’d been looking for some radios we might buy and found the exact Kenwood. I showed it to the teacher and when he saw the price, he exclaimed, “Buy it! That’s an excellent price.”

I thought the radio was in a town near my sister, Kathy, but it was 20 minutes South of Price, Utah. I debated about purchasing it and was about to give up, then I had an idea. Russell and Karen Goodrich live in Price. Surly they could pick it up for me — they were willing but not headed to Salt Lake any time soon. After they got it, I reached out to friends. Bob and Sharra Gray live in Price and I learned that Bob will be heading to Salt Lake on Wednesday. Kaneesha can meet Bob.

I’m probably a step or two away from getting it here, but it’s going to arrive — and I got it for an excellent price. They sell for $400 and I got it for $250.

I also met another man who often helps teach the class and he has the same radio. He actually got on FaceTime with me and Karen as she met the seller. He made certain that it came with everything we’d need. He then told me that because it was coming from Utah I’d want to clear the channels and prepare it for use in Idaho. He invited me to come to his home and he’d help us get it setup.

Another guy in the class passed the class in October and is studying for the next level license. He invited me to learn from him and sounds like he’d be able to help me install the radio. And some of the beginning usage steps.

While I’ve been nervous about passing the test, the biggest concerns I’ve had are, which radio to get, how to get it installed, setup, and how to begin using it. It sounds like I’m almost there!

This is definitely out of my comfort zone, but I can see the pathway opening up so quickly. Now, I’ve just got to pass the test... meet with my new friends and get things going. I can see how things are falling into place.

On Sunday I had the opportunity to attend the 13th ward conference. The ward boundaries include the home that I lived in until we moved to Rose when I was age 9. It was nice to see some of the people who still lived there.

While in the adult class on Sunday, President Dan Neff (the Stake Sunday School President) shared a quote from President Russell M. Nelson, that the adversary is growing his attacks on us at an exponential rate. We then discussed what exponential meant.

As the meeting was closing, President Chuck Jensen drew a chart on the board and pointed out that with these attacks doing what we did when we were children won’t work. Even growing at a steady, consistent rate won’t work. Our spiritual growth must be at an exponential rate in order for us to withstand the attacks. Come Follow Me is one of the programs the Lord has prepared to help us achieve exponential spiritual growth.

Another thing President Neff shared was his testimony of his spiritual growth in the past year, because of the Come Follow Me materials. His testimony strengthened mine as I realized that I too, have grown spiritually. I then felt the impression that our teachers and I need to bare testimony of the Come Follow Me materials often to help others make the growth that is needed.

By Sunday afternoon, I was exhausted. I debated to myself whether I should attend a work meeting in the American Falls Stake or simply rest, spend time with my family, and prepare for the week ahead. As I struggled with this decision, I felt that I should go. The meeting was good and I feel I provided some good insight that will help the stake in the near future. As the meeting closed, President Enriquez shared with us that he’d come late because he’d met with Elder Driscoll. He and Elder Driscoll had been alone together and Elder Driscoll shared his testimony of the Savior. President Enriquez then told us that he received a clear, powerful experience that Elder Driscoll is truly a witness of Christ. I felt impressed that this is true. Elder Driscoll is truly a witness of Christ.

In Kansas City, my supervisor bore a powerful testimony that the other general authorities of the Church are truly witnesses of Christ.

I felt that beyond believing in Christ, they are witnesses of Christ - as a witness in a trial. In this case, they have been selected by the Lord to be witnesses because of their testimony and the things that they have witnessed or seen of Christ.

With this emblazoned in my mind, I heard Sister Wendy Nelson speak to BYU-Hawaii on January 10, 2016, at a worldwide devotional, stating,

"My dear brothers and sisters, whom I love, the reality is that someday, you and I will each have an individual face-to-face interview with the Savior himself. When this eventuality becomes real to us, we will be willing to do whatever it takes to be prepared. So, now a question as I conclude.

"What if you learned that the Savior had already returned to this earth? That he, as part of his second coming, had already met with some of his true followers in several marvelous large gatherings. Gathering about which the world, including CNN and the bloggespherse knew nothing. If you found out that the Savior was already on the earth, what would you desperately want to do today and what would you be willing and ready to do tomorrow?

I believe that the apostles, seventy, and others are truly witnesses of Christ.
