Cottonwood-19
Last night I woke several times with my throat bothering me. I was beginning to worry that perhaps I had contracted Covid-19. I noticed that my nose was also affected. When I woke this morning, I realized that my eyes were blurry. Shortly after that, I remembered that the cottonwood trees have begun to release “cotton” puffs throughout the area. I believe that is the real culprit. I don’t know if I have a small allergy to cottonwood trees, but I know that each year I have these same symptoms when the cotton blows! Hopefully it's just Cottonwood-19. 😃
Way too many cottonwood trees this time of year!
This week was truly insane. Besides trying to keep up with family and my job, I met with Hank & Renee Goodnow (my friends who have been in the rental business for decades) and Austin Anderson (the executor of an estate who is considering selling property to me). We walked through 13 of the 15 units… Wow, what a mess! We’ll spend tens of thousands of dollars upfront, fixing them, if we buy them. We’ll see how negotiations go this week.
After that, I spent a lot of time working on the Plein Air Paint Out. This is an artist’s event where artists take their canvas and find a beautiful mountain scene, or city scape, or floral scene, etc. and capture it on their canvas. The painting is done outdoors, during the 3-day event. Then the paintings are brought to the Candy Jar Gallery and hung for judging and the public to enjoy.
We survived the event. Saturday I spent 12 hours working on the event… I also spent a lot of free time during the week on it. It was a great event. We hoped to have 15 artists for our first annual event. We actually had 28 participate. It was excellent, and I’m glad it’s over 😅. The paintings will hang for a month in the gallery. Two pieces have already sold.
It was so nice to have Kaneesha surprise us with a visit. We had a great time with her. I wish I could have had more time on Saturday to spend with her (other than late night), but I loved being with her again. On Sunday we enjoyed sacrament at home and visiting. Tanner and I then drove her into the gallery for a private viewing. Grandpa and Grandma also came in for a brief look. I love the art and enjoyed hearing Kaneesha’s opinion of the judge’s top choice. Both of us would have chosen others first, but we love knowing that that’s the beauty of art. Everyone has different tastes and preferences.
Besides Kaneesha's visit, Sunday morning Myranda reached out to me on Messenger. Everyone was asleep and I had a great little Father's Day chat! It was so nice to learn of her transfer. She'll be in a city that has had Elders for over a year. She and her companion will replace them. It also has only about 5 active members. The people will mostly speak with her in Slovak (fewer know English). I believe this will be a wonderful experience for her. She's also a new Sister Training Leader.
Because of that special visit with Myranda, I thought I'd include a quote from the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt:
Parley went on a mission headed for Toronto, Canada and travelled as far as Hamilton, New York. “I preached to the people and was kindly entertained till Monday morning, when I took leave and entered Hamilton, a flourishing town at the head of Lake Ontario; but my place of destination was Toronto, around on the north side of the lake.
“If I went by land I would have a circuitous route, muddy and tedious to go on foot. The lake had just opened, and steamers had commenced plying between the two places; two dollars would convey me to Toronto in a few hours, and save some days of laborious walking; but I was an entire stranger in Hamilton, and also in the province; and money I had none.
“Under these circumstances I pondered what to do. I had many times received answers to prayer in such matters; but now it seemed hard to exercise faith, because I was among strangers and entirely unknown. The Spirit seemed to whisper to me to try the Lord, and see if anything was too hard for him, that I might know and trust Him under all circumstances.
“I retired to a secret place in a forest and prayed to the Lord for money to enable me to cross the lake. I then entered Hamilton and commenced to chat with some of the people. I had not tarried many minutes before I was accosted by a stranger, who inquired my name and where I was going. He also asked me if I did not want some money. I said yes. He then gave me ten dollars and a letter of introduction to John Taylor, or Toronto, where I arrived the same evening.” Page 135
